PUBLIC SAFETY THROUGH PUBLIC SERVICE

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is recruiting for applicants who are interested in a career in law enforcement with the Division of Alaska State Troopers or the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Successful candidates will attend this 18-week academy in Sitka , Alaska .

The Department of Public Safety is Alaska 's primary law enforcement agency whose responsibilities encompass the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws. The mandate of the Department is to prevent loss of life and property as a result of illegal or unsafe acts. The Department enforces criminal laws, traffic laws, state fish and game regulations, and coordinates search and rescue operations throughout the state. DPS has two law enforcement divisions: the Alaska State Troopers and the Alaska Wildlife Troopers.

The Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers serve throughout the State, with many personnel being assigned to work in remote areas of Alaska . Alaska is unique by virtue of its diverse people, history, culture, natural resources, beauty, and career opportunities. The Division of Alaska State Troopers' main responsibility is the enforcement of all criminal and traffic laws, identification and apprehension of violators, and the prevention of crime and traffic violations. Specialized functions include: white collar crime, complex criminal investigations, drug and alcohol investigations, warrant service, prisoner transport, and search and rescue missions.

The Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers' main responsibility is to protect Alaska 's wildlife resources through education and enforcement of laws and regulations governing the use of natural resources within Alaska and its adjacent waters. The Wildlife Troopers also participate in the overall mission of DPS through enforcement of criminal laws and participation in search and rescue operations.

Applicants will be allowed to indicate their preference as to whether they would like to be considered for the Alaska State Troopers or the Alaska Wildlife Troopers; however, successful applicants will be offered positions in either of the divisions at the discretion of the Department.
