FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. --

A man who fatally shot a sheriff's deputy Tuesday had been ordered by a court to undergo a mental evaluation and had twice left a hospital before barricading himself in a home and triggering a shootout with police, authorities said.

Deputies later shot and killed the man, police said.

Okaloosa County Deputy Anthony Forgione, 33, from Niceville, was the second Florida officer in less than a week to be killed in the line of duty. Authorities identified his shooter as 46-year-old Mark Reed Rohlman.

Deputies served the order to Rohlman Monday afternoon and took him to Ridgeway Center Inc., a behavior health center for evaluation.

Rohlman left the hospital and was picked up again by police. Authorities said he kicked out the window of a police cruiser, injuring himself, and was returned to the hospital.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Assistant Special Agent Steven Desposito said Rohlman again walked away from the hospital. Later, Rohlman had obtained a shotgun and barricaded himself inside a home in Fort Walton Beach, a community in Florida's Panhandle. It was not immediately clear if it was Rohlman's home.

Sheriff's deputies, including a special response team, went to the home. Members of a crisis negotiation unit attempted to talk Rohlman into coming out, but received no response. Officers entered the home and Rohlman fired the gun, killing Forgione, authorities said.

"They did their job this morning. They did it well. Unfortunately, we lost a deputy," Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Michele Nicholson said Forgione was married and had two young children. He was the department's first officer to be killed while on duty. He was a former Fort Walton Beach police officer who was hired by the sheriff's department in 2005.

Desposito said Rohlman's autopsy was planned later Tuesday and could not comment on whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Morris said a trust fund was set up for Forgione, whose funeral was scheduled for Saturday at the Niceville Assembly of God Church.

Last Friday, Fort Myers police officer Andrew Widman was fatally shot outside a nightclub. The suspect ran from the scene while firing at other officers and was shot and killed by police.

Funeral Information

Deputy Forgione's funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Niceville Assembly of God Church.

The family will receive visitors at the church from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

A trust fund has been set up for Forgione's widow and two children at Beach Community Bank.

Tragedy
I knew Deputy Forgione personally. He was exact replica of the ideal law enforcement officer. He was professional and kind and knew how to do his job well.

He has a wife and two children left behind. My heart cries out to them and I say a prayer for their comfort.

I do not wish to take away anything from Tony because he gave his life for the cause he was sworn to but it is a terrible tragedy.

Tony, you will be missed and God give you comfort while you rest in his arms.

Your Ultimate Sacrifice
Our loss is heaven's gain. It is an unbelievable tragedy but your memory will live on, sustained by myself and the many, many brother's and sisters at OCSO who love and respect you dearly. Tony, not having you around any longer - to laugh at, work alongside of, talk to -- is an unbearable thought, but I am so very proud of you, will miss you always and will keep you forever in my heart. You were an awesome friend, father and officer. Rest easy knowing that your family will be well cared for and wrapped in our prayers, love and faith. S-

Pissed OFF!
I didn't know you but, my heart goes out to your family and friends that you left behind, because I too wear the badge. It really pisses me off that we have to play these catch and release games day after day with people like that on the streets. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHERE WAS THIS IDIOT'S FAMILY? OH, I'm sorry, they probably were afraid of him! I promise you this, I will not loose any sleep over the fact that SWAT killed that Idiot. You should do like China and send his family a bill for the bullet!

A prayer

I bring this prayer to You, Lord
For You alone can give
What one cannot demand from oneself.
Give me, Lord, what you have left over,
Give me what no-one ever asks You for.
I don't ask You for rest,
Or quiet,
Whether of soul or body;
I don't ask You for wealth,
Nor for success, nor even health perhaps.
That sort of thing You get asked for so much
That You can't have any of it left.
Give me, Lord, what you have left over,
Give me what no-one wants from you.
I want insecurity, strife,
And I want You to give me these
Once and for all.
So that I can be sure of having them always,
Since I shall not always have the courage
To ask You for them.
Give me, Lord, what You have left over,
Give me what others want nothing to do with.
But give me courage too,
And strength and faith;
For You alone can give
What one cannot demand from oneself.

The Final Inspection
The Final Inspection

The deputy stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, deputy.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The deputy squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the deputy waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, deputy,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

you know when we put that badge everyday we wonder what were going to get into today, and yet somehow we've got what us Puerto Ricans call cojones to go out and still do the job, it takes alot of thinking is it worth it. Hell yea it is. My brother in blue will never be forgotten, for his squad, keep your heads up, thats what he would have wanted, don't look down and give these s------ the smile they want so bad.
