JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --

A man walking a dog across Pearl Street late Tuesday night was hit and killed by a police car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Lt. Bill Leeper with FHP said four JSO cruisers were heading north on Pearl Street in Brentwood about 10:30 p.m. He said the units had lights and sirens on, responding to an emergency call.

The FHP report said as one of the patrol cars approached the intersection at West 24th Street, a 61-year-old man walking a dog walked in front of the car. Ronnie James Wilson Sr. was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the police cruiser was Officer Nicole McBroom, 32.

Police have not released any other details on the incident. It's not clear what happened to the dog.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

remember people, you MUST slow down at ALL intersections even with your lights and sirens! this is a part of the PROTECT and serve resposibilities you have. such a senseless tragedy. didnt say how fast they were driving. im seeing more and more stories of officers not being responsible with the powers they are given. peace to the family of the victim.

Adam, people like you make me sick "your going too fast, your going too slow." We cant do anything right according to you. Put yourself in the Officers shoes if you get somewhere a few seconds late and someone is dead or injured you need to live with that. If something tragic like killing a pedistrian you must live with that as well. She also is going to be sued because "with due regard" is in the statue that allows us to exceed the speed limit. Officers have more pressure on them everyday on and off duty people like make this a thankless job

It never ceases to amaze me how even cops arm chair quarterback an incident! Adam 219 you've already got WPD in Cincinnati as having no common sense. Also, you "sure don't need a renegade on the dept"? I'm sure glad I don't work with you! You're right there with your judgemental attitude guy, aren't you? No one knows the circumstances of this incident but you've already got the officer in the wrong. It's very sad what happened but why the beef with the cop? Chill out dude!

Car Hits Man
Too bad; for both the Officer and the dude she hit. I don't think WE, we being fellow cops, need to be throwing her under the bus though. Its tragic; it sucks; but it also comes with the job. Adam I know I aint perfect, and I am pretty sure you aren't either, so lets cut OUR fellow Officer a break.

ADAM 219,

That is pretty much common sense, but pray-tel how do YOU know she wasn't slowing down at the intersections? YOU ASSUME. NONE OF US KNOW the whole story so it is pointless to even assume. First off, the intersection of 24th St. and North Pearl St. is in a residential block, N. Pearl St. HAS RIGHT OF WAY. All traffic on 24th St. must yield. So its not like she blew a stop sign or red light.

The pedestrian should of heard the sirens, seen the lights, there is no way not to have noticed unless you're blind, and deaf. Now I could speculate but I won't. None of us have the whole story, so we have to wait and see. So don't go pass judgement.

You Scratch My Back, I'll Scratch Yours
Is It "Balance And Check" OR "You Scratch My Back, I'll Scratch Yours?" ...last I checked It Was Supposed To Be Balance And Check...To Avoid Corrupt Practices That Have Developed.

I agree you have a right to your opinion. However, when that opinion includes unsubstantiated innuendos then it becomes a accusation instead of opinion. Unless you could testify to the fact either by observing the accident or determining it by a complete on scene investigation, you should not comment on it either way. .

I have seen where "know it all" officers have made unsubstantiated remarks that were not true in a case involving a fellow officer. Opposing attorneys bought these remarks up in court even though they were untrue. It helped them to sway the jury to there side.
